The South Sudan People Liberation Movement and Army in Opposition have accused an unnamed group of engineering party disputes.
A faction of the SPLM/A-IO emerged on Tuesday, August 3rd, declared Lt. Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual as interim Chairman replaced the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar.
The group said the decision was reached at SPLA-IO headquarter in Magenis near Sudan border after several disagreements between Dr. Riek and his former Chief of staff Gen. Gatwech over the peace implementation.
The SPLM-IO political bureau in Juba disregarded the group that makes the declaration cited as not the party’s leadership.
“The three generals who met in Magenis do not constitute the SPLA (IO) leadership of the Military Command. Council. The Military Command Council is composed of Commander in Chief, Chief of general Staff and his deputies, Commanders of the nine Sectors and Commanders of general Headquarters,” SPLM-IO Stated.
The SPLM in Opposition, led by Dr. Riek Machar, described the move as “regrettable.
“The declaration intended to derail the formation of unifying command, graduation, and deployment of unified forces, which remain an outstanding priority after the conclusion of reconstitution of National Legislature.”
SPLM-IO said the situation is under control and it will not take the country back to war. “The Political Bureau assured the SPLM/A(IO) members and the people of South Sudan that the situation is under control.”
Sudan People Liberation Movement in Opposition is a party to the peace agreement signed in 2018.
