President Salva Kiir appointed top opposition commander to political post in the revitalized peace agreement. General Simon Gatwech Dual was appointed on Monday 21 June as Presidential Advisors for Peace in a decree read on National TV, SSBC.
Kiir was granted powers to appoint and remove the cabinets by the revitalized peace agreement parties signed in 2018.
The new Advisor to the presidency is also Chief of staff for SPLA- in Opposition based at Magenis near Sudan in the north
His appointment came after the IO tackling internal issues after General Gatwech sacked his director of military intelligence, Maj. General Dhiling Keak Chuol. SPLM-IO’s Chairperson, Dr. Machar, overturned that order.
The Chief of staff has been questioning the unreasonable delays in the implementation of the revitalization.
SPLM – IO’s Director of Information Puok Both Baluang said Gen Gatwech was consulted before his appointment. And demised the rumors suggesting that the chief of staff declined the new post.
“We’ve not received an official communication from General Simon Gatwech formally informing the Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/A (IO) declining to take the new position. We would like to confirm to the pure members and the public at large that General Simon Gatwech was officially consulted and he give the leadership of the party his consent to take the role” Baluang said.
Kiir also appointed Dr. Costello Gargang Ring Lual, the South Sudan Patriotic Movement (SSPM), as presidential Advisor on presidential affairs.
Their appointment also comes at a crucial time in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement. A week ago, defense minister Angelina Teny said the parties are almost done with forming the unified military command.
