Thirty soldiers reported kills in the clashes of SPLA-IO factions

Fighting erupts in Magenis near Sudan border between forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar and those supporting Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual.

The Spokesperson of the Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA-IO), Col. Gabriel Lam Paul, said the two factions of the SPLM/A in Opposition clashes on Saturday.

“This morning, the 7/08/2021 at about 6:30 AM, the anti-peace forces of Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual moved out of their trenches in Magenis and launched aggressive attacks against the SPLA-IO forces in Gezan,” Lam said.

Over thirty soldiers were reported dead on both sides, several others wounded.

The SPLA-IO, loyal to First Vice president Dr. Riek Machar has called the Sudanese government to maintain neutrality.

 “We’re aware that Gen. Gatwech Dual and Lt. Gen. Johnson Ulony were evacuated to Sudan. The SPLA-IO leadership requests the Sudan Government to maintain its neutrality by keeping the two in Sudan and not allowing them to come back and cause more insecurity in the area,” he stated.

The Spokesperson of the group supporting Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual is not yet available to comment.

A faction of the SPLM/A-IO emerged on Tuesday, August 3rd, declared Lt. Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual as interim Chairman replaced the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar.

The group said the decision was reached at SPLA-IO headquarter in Magenis near Sudan border after several disagreements between Dr. Riek and his former Chief of staff Gen. Gatwech over the peace implementation.
